I'm assuming the question was to find out The number of squares that can be formed on an 8x8 chessboard.

There are many different-sized squares on a chessboard.

  1. 1x1 square (marked with red colour ) = 64 
  2. 2x2 square (marked with yellow colour ) = 49
  3. 3x3 square (marked with green colour ) = 36
  4. 4x4 square (marked with blue colour ) = 25
  5. 5x5 square (marked with violet colour ) = 16
  6. 6x6 square (marked with olive colour ) = 9
  7. 7x7 square (marked with pink colour ) = 4
  8. 8x8 square (marked with orange colour ) = 1

So, total no. of Squares = 64 + 49 + 36 + 25 + 16 + 9 + 4 + 1 

                                       = 204
